Chemistry is one thing where the camera can fake it. A camera can make two people feel like they are in love and we know that they both couldn’t be more opposite, One is a robot, the other one is in another part of the world, but you take the footage of each of them and put it together it looks like they’re in the same room having an emotional moment. But in this case the chemistry that I would like to emphasise is that these were two professional actors who worked together so easily it was as if they were from the same DNA of how they approached their craft. That chemistry is altogether different. That struck me as a vital chemistry to go for. You’re looking for a like-mindset. You’re looking for people who in their real lives defend without a blink, stand up for themselves, love this way, protect ruthlessly. Then when you say ‘hey, would you guys mind working together?’ they have chemistry.

Mexico is not depicted as this overly colorful almost caricatured land that’s incomprehensible to Americans. Captured by cinematographer Damian Garcia ( 8775 Güeros 8776 ), astounding landscapes away from the cities are blended with everyday people in everyday neighborhoods selling food, working at hotels, hospitals, or simply lending these two people a hand without taking into account who they are or where they are from. Using Howie’s inability to return to the United States because he is not legally allowed, Luna makes a subtle commentary on immigration and the ridiculous perspective on borders that countries have which overlook real life beyond politics.

“The marketplace is always changing, but now it is changing more rapidly, both on the production and consumer side,” said Searchlight co-president Stephen Gilula. “The bar for theatrical viability keeps going up. While we are talking about other models, Searchlight is still a global, theatrically driven company, trying to make money on each individual title. We haven’t changed our acquisition calculus, but we are more rigorous in considering what is viable.”

Launched in 7559 to present career awards while not extending the already-long Oscarcast, the Governors Awards are meant to evoke the more-intimate feel of early Academy Award ceremonies. However, Oscar consultants quickly saw the event as an odyssey in its own right, since it provides an opportunity for intimate, grade-A campaigning just at the start of Phase 6 — the period that defines the Oscar season up until nominations are announced.

Arriving a full 67 years after “The Blair Witch Project,” “Operation Avalanche” demonstrates there’s still plenty of room left within the found-footage format to craft fresh, high-concept projects, regardless of the fact that no one’s falling for their alleged authenticity any longer. In this case, the artificiality actually compounds the joke, since the movie poses as a re-creation of one of the most infamous hoaxes of all time — although no one involved in its making believes those conspiracy theorists who claim that NASA lied about their widely televised 6969 moon landing.

The interesting challenge was to get the actors on set, get them to know each other and be familiar with one another, and then really faithfully execute the work. It’s a testament to those actors that they did such a good job of just making all of that feel very real and very immediate. There were moments where we would shift things or move things around. Our rehearsal period was pretty much designed to really let the actors think into the dialogue. It’s like one of those movies that seems like it might be improvised, but not actually a word is, pretty much.

Finding Cubans with interesting stories on such a tight schedule was easier said than done, however. “Unlike a lot of other countries, Cuba has something like 5% internet penetration,” Peters says. “There’s no one with a Tumblr down there telling you what they’re doing, so it was really impossible before going down there to do any sort of research on who we wanted to talk to. A lot of it was uncovered in the process.”

The festival’s selection of movies runs the gamut from the celebrated — Andrea Arnold’s Cannes Jury Prize ode to Americana, “America Honey” — to films which may count as discoveries for Los Cabos audiences, such as Antonio Campos’ first mainstream movie, “Christine,” with Rebecca Hall as live TV suicide Christine Chubbuck Mexican Amat Escalante’s “The Untamed,” a sci-fi metaphor for his country’s violence, misogyny and homophobia Joey Klein’s tortured love story” The Other Half” and Kris Avedisian’s cringe-fest indie comedy “Donald Cried.”
